There are a lot of strange things on earth. When we think that we have seen it all, our planet shows us something new. One such strange discovery took place back in the year 2007. Mark Holley, a professor, and researcher at Northwestern Michigan College found something amazing under Lake Michigan. The site he found during a scan had an eerie resemblance to the famous Stonehenge structure in the UK. This resemblance has earned its present name Lake Michigan Stonehenge. In this piece, we will try to know more about this superb discovery.
How was this site found?
As we already mentioned, a professor and researcher named Mark Holley first discovered the structure under Lake Michigan. In the year 2007, he conducted a scan under the lake in hopes to find and research some old shipwrecks. During the initial stages, he found a car and some old shipwrecks (older than the Civil War period). While it could be considered a success, it wasn’t the end of it. After a little while, he found a stone structure underwater. This structure had a heavy resemblance to the iconic Stonehenge. However, the stones found under the lake were not as tall as those of the original site. What made the two structures similar was the way they were arranged. The arrangement of the stones made it obvious that the site was man-made and not some natural formation. Needless to say, it is an old structure. Some experts think that the site could even be around 9000 years old. But we can’t be too sure about it as there is no concrete evidence of its origins. Further research is pending. It’s not that archeologists don’t have the desire to do it. It’s just there is a severe lack of funding that has made things harder.
Facts about this stone structure
1. The structure consists of multiple stones. These stones are arranged in a perfect circular shape. It is only possible for humans to do.
2. One of the stones has a mastodon carved on it. The fine carving proves that humans are behind it. Also, the tools that were needed to carve this thing on the stone were not available before the Ice Age. So, it is difficult, if not impossible, that it was carved before the Ice Age began.
3. While the radiocarbon dating shows that the structure is 9000 years old, it has to be older than that. But how old? We still don’t have the answer.
4. The discovery of the structure is among the most exciting discoveries ever known to man. It is a huge asset to humankind. If researched properly, it could enlighten us about many aspects still unknown to man.
Conclusion
As you can see, this stone structure under Lake Michigan is indeed one of the greatest discoveries of all time. Although its origins are still unknown, it has the potential to give us insights into numerous unknown aspects of history. For that, proper research is required. But unless archeologists get proper funds they won’t be able to conduct further research on the structure. So, let’s see what the future brings.
